The Drop: A Snowfall Saga brings Wanda Bell and Leon Simmons back into viewers’ lives, but Gail Bean and Isaiah John are clear: these are not the same folks followers left at the finish of Snowfall.

The new FX collection follows Wanda and Leon as they strive to reinvent themselves in Nineteen Nineties Los Angeles, where the rise of West Coast rap provides new potentialities and new issues. For Wanda, that means reworking years of dependancy and survival into ambition and entry.

We spoke with Bean and John about Wanda’s starvation, Leon’s devotion, and whether their characters can ever actually outrun the previous.

“What I discovered about Wanda’s ambition is what she’s willing to sacrifice,” Bean instructed BOSSIP. “A lot of this resilience has always been in her.” Bean pointed to a line Leon once said about Wanda on Snowfall, “One thing Wanda ain’t…is weak.” That power takes on a completely different form in The Drop. Wanda is no longer merely making an attempt to survive dependancy and the devastation crack cocaine introduced to her life; she desires to construct something of her own.

“Wanda is fearless, but she is also tired,” Bean said. “She’s been through a lot.”

According to Bean, surviving the worst has modified Wanda’s relationship with concern.

“Once you have seen and gone through so much, then your fear starts to dissipate,” she said. “She feels that she’s seen it all. She’s seen the worst. She’s done the worst.”

In Wanda’s thoughts, Bean added,

“There’s nowhere to go, but up.” In this collection, Bean said the only factor left for Wanda to do is to be nice.

Can Wanda And Leon Outgrow Their Past?

Both characters also face the query at the heart of The Drop: how much should your previous decide who you are allowed to become?

John said, “That’s solely up to us as individuals,” including that self-work is essential to acknowledge the patterns folks can fall into.

Bean agreed, saying the previous can become either an impediment or something helpful.

“We evolve, right? We can expand,” she said. “It’s up to us to decide if we want to allow our past to be something that’s a hindrance and hold us back, or if we want to allow it to be a step stool and help lift us up.”

As for whether Wanda and Leon will discover their means absolutely back to each other, particularly after that viral second where Dara put her bid in for Leon, Bean and John weren’t giving up any of that tea. “You gotta watch,” they teased.

Considering everything these two characters have been through collectively, with love still lingering between them, we definitely will.
