Matt Blake, Yankees pitching coaches have become indispensable

As the Yankees world awaits phrase on Aaron Boone, who still has a 12 months left on his contract, nearly as consequential is the destiny of a pending free agent on his employees.

Matt Blake is much less divisive than his boss, but arguably just as essential, particularly coming off a 12 months in which he and the Yankees’ pitching group got the most out of a employees that was lacking its highest-paid arms for appreciable quantities of time and had a largely no-name bullpen — and still managed to lead the majors in ERA (3.23).

“I think he’s pretty damn good at his job,” Will Warren said as the common season was winding down.

The expectation is that Blake will be back for a third contract, barring a shock such as the Yankees firing Boone and a new supervisor wanting to deliver in his own employees. Because for as many points as the Yankees have had in current years that have led to repeated October disappointments, their pitching principally has been the exception.
